If you start at Watersmeet and walk beside the river up the East Lynn valley you will pass through Barton Wood, the upper reaches of which you are looking at in this image. The valley is deep and steep sided so that autumn sunlight struggles to reach the valley floor even at mid day. It does, however, illuminate the upper slopes as you can see here. Look at those deep shadows contrasting with the sunlit areas. Look also the grassy slopes on the right hand side and you will see a red deer grazing in the autumn sunshine.
