Local folklore says that these two boulders were thrown in a contest between the devil and a giant. The purpose of the contest, or its outcome, is unclear.
Lying amidst the heather on Porlock Common if you did not know they were here you would not notice them. In springtime a scattering of daffodils appear beside the stones, and in late summer they are swamped in the pinks and purples of the moorland heather as you see in this image. The view from this spot is one of my favouites in all of Exmoor.
